On Christmas Eve 2008 we organised our annual Christmas festivities for homeless, impoverished and lonely people in Helsinki at the Töölö Sports Hall – though we may soon need to look for a larger venue for this increasingly popular event. The event’s estimated 1,500 guests enjoyed a festive Christmas meal and a seasonal programme of music and Christian sermons.
On Boxing Day 26.12.2008 food remaining from the Christmas festivities was distributed among needy guests at our traditional Leftover Party at the Töölö Sports Hall.
Thank you to everyone who contributed donations or their time as volunteer workers to these successful events!
On 6th December 2008, Veikko and Lahja Hursti’s Charitable Association again marked Finland’s Independence Day by organising an outdoor afternoon concert and soup kitchen in Helsinki’s Hakaniemi Square, for the homeless and other needy people as a counterpoint to the President’s glamorous televised ball on the same evening. Guests were given coffee, sandwiches and hot soup, and about 700 free food packages were also distributed. The afternoon was blessed with sunshine, and music from Koiton Laulu and the Taivaasta Tuulee Trio.
Our new office in Mellunmäki, Helsinki, was ceremoniously opened on 27.9.2008
